Ever heard the expression “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”? Well, there’s truth in those words. Flavonoids found in apples, like quercetin, can destroy cancer-causing free radicals in the lungs. According to a 1999 study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, people who eat apples on a regular basis can lower their risk of lung cancer by up to 60 percent.

- Beta-carotene (whole fruits and veggies—usually orange in color—like carrots, cantaloupe, squash, mangoes, and sweet potatoes). But stick to whole foods; supplements that isolate beta-carotene seem to have the opposite effect—especially in smokers—though researchers don’t know why.
- Curcumin (turmeric and curry)
- Ellagic acid (blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, and walnuts)
- ECGC and polyphenols (green and black tea, oregano, rosemary, and thyme)

- Selenium and sulfur (garlic)
quick tips
- The late Louise Hay, renowned mind, body, soul expert and author of You Can Heal Your Life, believed that all physical illness was linked to an emotional and mental state. According to Hay, lung issues may be caused by depression, grief, or feeling unworthy of living a full life. To counteract the energy of those types of feelings, you could practice sitting upright and taking big breaths while using the following affirmations, I am safe, I am supported, and I am loved. I have the capacity to take in the fullness of life. I lovingly live life to the full. Every time you feel fear or sadness say these affirmations, even if you don’t believe them yet. This can help the subconscious mind and help to override a negative emotion.
- The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute recommends exercise for people with lung cancer. Even if you have shortness of breath, exercise can help you to decrease fatigue and the risk of secondary illnesses related to the cancer. Definitely consult with
your care team before you begin. Light walking or physical therapy is the safest option. Listen to your body, Try not to get frustrated if you cannot do as much as you used to do right away; just start low and slow, doing 5-10 minutes at a time several times per day. Easy cycling or swimming are good too.
• Improve your posture to take in more oxygen. Keep your shoulders and chin back and open your chest to encourage deeper breathing.
